Borough President Marty Markowitz unexpectedly approved the Rose Plaza development project this week, according to sources close to the applicants, Isaac Rosenberg.

The move comes after Community Board 1 last month voted against the project, located on Williamsburg’s South Side, bordered by Kent Avenue on the east, Division Avenue on the south and the Schaefer Landing complex to the north, for what they saw as a lack of affordable housing at 20 percent.

The project now moves to the City Planning Commission, which will evaluate the recommendations made by the community board and borough president within the next 30 days.
