Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz’s Seaside Summer Concert Series could be moved out of Coney Island’s Asser Levy Park this summer while the future of a massive amphitheater planned there for larger shows plays out in court.
Markowitz had been hosting concerts at Asser Levy Park since 1991 despite a city law prohibiting amplified sound within 500 feet of religious institutions and schools when services are taking place.
Sea Breeze Jewish Center and Temple Beth Abraham in Brighton Beach are across the street from the existing band shell at Asser Levy Park, and both say they host services daily.
The concert series were never an issue until Markowitz four years ago proposed expanding them with a $64 million amphitheater for the park. Opponents are now fighting the shows in court. A victory by the concert opponents could be a death knell for the amphitheater.
Geoffrey Croft of New York City Park Advocates, one of the opponents, said he has been informed that the city agreed to move the concerts for this summer.
“We are very happy that the concerts are being moved,” he said.
Markowitz, through a spokesman , wouldn’t confirm much.
“All options are on the table, and the shows will go on this summer,” he said.
Sources told NY1 that one possible location to relocate the concerts is the parking lot of the New York Aquarium across Surf Avenue.
The case returns to Brooklyn Supreme Court April 7.
