A fugitive on Massachusetts’ most-wanted list for a string of armed robberies hanged himself in a southern New York jail, the Times Herald-Record reported Tuesday.

A deputy found Kerry Castello, 45, hanging by a bedsheet Sunday at 1:36pm in a cell in the Sullivan County Jail in Monticello, N.Y.

He was pronounced dead at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, N.Y.

Castello was captured by state and federal officers at a relative’s house in White Sulphur Springs, N.Y., on May 19.

He went on the lam last summer after ramming through a police barricade, the Standard-Times in New Bedford, Mass., reported.

In addition to the charges that he robbed at least four convenience stores in June 2010, police charged Castello with breaking into a New Bedford home and stealing credit cards, cash and a television. He allegedly tried to use the credit cards at local businesses.

On June 28, 2010, the New Bedford Police Department’s Gang Unit found Castello driving his pickup truck and tried to corner him. However, police said Castello drove through their barricade with his black Ford Ranger, ramming into a cruiser and driving onto the sidewalk.

Police said the suspect’s wife was in the passenger seat at the time.
