A blaze destroyed a historic New Jersey church early Sunday.

The 140-year-old Shiloh Baptist Church in Elizabeth was ravaged by flames at around 3 a.m., according to fire officials.

No one was in the building at the time.

“We were anticipating waking up this morning, coming to church to worship . . . and you wake up to this,” the Rev. William Ingram, the church’s pastor, told NJ.com. “[But] that’s the nature of life, and you know, that’s why we have faith.”

Everything “was fine yesterday evening, so I don’t know what happened,” he added.

Valerie Truitt, who lives next door to the church, which was opened in 1879, said she woke to banging on her door from someone urging her to get out.

“The whole church was engulfed in flames — the flames were sky high,” Truitt told NJ.com.

“I was just shocked to see that church, because that’s an old church. And it just went up in flames.”
