A massive fire that lit up a Bronx building Saturday left an elderly woman – who was known for burning candles – dead, her devastated daughter and police told The Post.
The fire started on Leland Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, engulfing the upper floors of a three-story building, officials said.
Families fled for their lives while black smoke and red flames rose from the building.
A massive fire that lit up a Bronx building Saturday left an elderly woman dead, her devastated daughter and police told The Post. LoudLabs NYCVictim Elizabeth Rodriguez, 80, was the only person who couldn’t make it out.
“I’ll never forget the screams that I heard from her. I woke up, used the bathroom, less than 10 minutes [later], I heard ‘Oh, ohhh, ohhhh…’ that’s all I heard,” said tenant Twiler Howard, 65.
Howard said firemen pulled Rodriguez’s limp body outside and performed CPR waiting for the ambulance to arrive, but she couldn’t be saved.
Neighbors said Rodriguez had filled her home with candles.
“When you come in the living room, the candles are all over the place – live candles, not fake candles, the candles in the glass, those are the ones she was using,” Howard said.
Audrey Williams, 61, who lives next door, had expressed concerns about the candles with the landlord.
“I spoke to the landlord, I said ‘Listen, she’s putting us all in danger. You have to talk to her,’ she said.
The victim’s daughter Joan Bonilla Rosado, who was visiting her mother’s burned out home, claimed the fire started in the bedroom – and had nothing to do with candles.
She said her mom was from Puerto Rico and practiced Santeria, a spiritual religion originating in Cuba that frequently involves candles.
But the daughter claimed she swapped out all her mom’s real candles for LED ones about two years ago.
Bonilla Rosado blamed the landlord’s “negligence” for the fire.
“But this is negligent. Her lights were flickering. Her stove wasn’t working,” she said.
An FDNY spokesperson could not confirm the cause of the fire.
