Some choice.

Mayor Bloomberg today endorsed higher tolls on Port Authority crossings, saying that while they might hurt some businesses and individuals, the alternative could be disastrous — tumbling bridges.

“It certainly doesn’t help,” the mayor said of the impact of the new tolls on the city’s economy.

“It’s probably hard to measure the hurt. But it will hurt some things. Certainly hurt some businesses and some people. On the other hand, if one of the bridges fall down, how would you feel about that for the economy?”

Cash tolls on the George Washington Bridge, Holland and Lincoln Tunnels and other PA crossings are scheduled to go up from $8 to $12 on Sunday. EZ-pass holders would pay $9.50 during peak periods.

In another assessment of the national economy on his WOR Radio show, the mayor warned against allowing frustration to simmer among jobless college graduates in the U.S.

“You have a lot of kids graduating college who can’t find jobs,” he said. “That’s what happened in Cairo. That’s what happened in Madrid. You don;t want those kinds of riots here.”
