The federal government should consider the possibility of terrorists launching a nuclear attack on New York City when doling out homeland-security funds, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

“We’ve got to start taking this threat seriously. And for us to do that, the federal government must take New York City seriously and give us the resources we need to protect what is clearly the terrorists’ No. 1,” Bloomberg said yesterday at a meeting in Manhattan with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano.

He said he wants the feds to restore funding to the “Securing the Cities” initiative, which gave money to the New York City metro area to help law-enforcement personnel detect radioactive materials.

Bloomberg insisted that “local politics” should have nothing to do with how much money states and cities get from Uncle Sam. “Trying to spread the money around as pork barrel is just irresponsible,” he said.
