ALBANY — Well, we had a stimulus binge. Now here comes the hangover.
The state’s share of Medicaid costs will soar 77 percent next year, as the federal stimulus dries up and New Yorkers foot the bill for skyrocketing enrollment, state financial chiefs disclosed yesterday.
The state-funded portion of the public-health insurance program is projected to hit $13.2 billion in 2011 — up from $7.4 billion this year — and to fuel an estimated $9 billion budget gap. The ’09 stimulus offset growth to Medicaid, as ever more New Yorkers sought assistance.
The state expects to receive $353 million before the stimulus runs out next July. It got $3.9 billion this year.
