City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito is urging the state to allow kids as young as 9 to get the human papillomavirus vaccine without parental consent.

HPV can lead to cancer. Its vaccine is most effective when taken between age 9 and 12, but state law stops minors from receiving it without adult permission.

In August, the speaker revealed she had contracted the virus.
