The Metropolitan Museum of Art has reattributed an Old Master painting in its collection to the 17th-century Spanish master Diego Velazquez.
The museum says it made the determination after “a technical examination and cleaning” of layers of thick varnish from a past restoration of “Portrait of a Man.”
It had previously ascribed the work to Velazquez’s workshop.
