The families of two slain NYPD cops are meeting the Mets in Florida this weekend — thanks to a pitch by team captain David Wright.
The team invited the relatives of Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu for an Amazin’ getaway in Port St. Lucie.
Ramos’ wife, Maritza, and sons Justin, 19, and Jaden, 13, joined Liu’s widow, Pei Xia, mom Xiu Yan and dad Wei Pang as the team’s honored guests for spring training.
Justin and Jaden, who are serving as Mets bat boys with personalized uniforms, were honored Friday with their very own clubhouse lockers.
Rafael Ramos and Wenjian LiuGetty ImagesWright, whose dad, Rhon, was an assistant police chief in Norfolk, Va., reached out to the Ramos boys when he heard they were avid Mets fans.
He said making the phone call was one of the most difficult things he’s ever had to do.
“There’s not really much — there is nothing you can say or do to fully understand what these kids, these families are going through,” the All-Star third baseman said Friday. “And then once you get on the phone with them, you are at a loss for words because you just don’t know how to articulate how sorry you are for the loss of a hero.”
Liu and Ramos were ambushed and killed execution-style last Dec. 20 in Brooklyn.
Wright, who invited the families to a big dinner Friday, said honoring cops is important to him.
“The best way to describe it is you try to explain to them how much of a hero their father is and how much we appreciate the service their family has given us and maybe for a split second you try to distract them from the pain of losing a father,” Wright said.
