Mexican drug cartels are smuggling so much heroin into the city that cops have seized more than 716 pounds this year — double the 353 pounds they scooped up during the same period last year.
“We’ve got a crisis on our hands, and it’s a crisis that’s been growing rapidly,” said City Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley (D-Queens) at a City Hall hearing on the issue Tuesday. “We have to get ahold of it.”
In 2014, the NYPD seized 1,034 pounds of smack, according to Assistant Chief Brian McCarthy, who heads the Narcotics Division.
The department is now on pace to seize more than 2,000 pounds this year.
