The NYPD is far too busy to deal with jaywalking, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday, and suggested common sense is the best way to curb the problem.

“The practical reality is I think the Police Department has plenty to do,” Bloomberg said yesterday in response to a Post exposé on the epidemic that left one tourist under a double-decker bus this week.

“You’re going to have to generally depend on people’s common sense to be self-enforcing, because the police can’t possibly give out tickets to everybody that jaywalks.”

Police officials did not respond to calls seeking comment.

The mayor said he hopes pictures that ran in The Post showing the woman who had her legs crushed by the bus while jaywalking near the United Nations would be warning enough.
