Blocking the growth of NYU has the potential to destroy the university, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday in a spirited defense of the university’s expansion plans.

NYU has proposed adding 2.4 million square feet of classroom and dorm space in Greenwich Village, mostly on land it already owns within two apartment complexes.
