The horrified mom of a 9-year-old girl shot while playing with her cousin at a Brooklyn park fainted twice when she got the call that her young daughter was wounded, she told The Post Tuesday.

Melissa Alexander, 36, said she “just lost it” Monday night when a relative called her at her security guard job to tell her that little Ruanna Paris Brown and her cousin, Empress Alexander Davis, 11, had been hit by stray bullets at the Hilltop Playground in Brownsville.

“Once they called me, I rushed back home. I was on my way home pretty much,” Alexander said. “I rushed even faster. I broke down in the street. I passed out twice, three times because I just couldn’t believe it. I went to the hospital.

“This has happened before in the park,” the worried mom added. “It’s many days when I tell my daughter,  ‘I don’t want you in the park today.’ Sometimes I just have my feelings and my moments, I don’t like the park. Every time it gets warm this is what happens. Either it’s fighting or shooting or something.”

She said Ruanna, who was shot in the leg, was released from the hospital early Tuesday.

Her cousin, who was hit in the back, remained at Brookdale Hospital where she was undergoing tests.

The youngsters — “best friends,” per Ruanna’s mom — were frolicking at the playground when two gunmen aiming at someone else began shooting, with both girls caught in the line of fire, according to police.

“People just started shooting out of nowhere — wildfire. They don’t know where exactly it came from. They were running. They didn’t even realize they got shot at first,” Alexander said.

Empress’ mother, who was taking care of the girls, watched as they both went down and the unidentified gunmen took off — and remained at large. 

“I’m here and I’m just blessed because my baby is still with me,”  mom Michelle Alexander, Melissa’s sister, said from the hospital Tuesday night, telling The Post that doctors did not take the bullet out, but “are gonna let it go through the process and let the tissue and broken bones and everything heal.”

“She got shot in the right side of her back,” she said of Empress. “When she gets the medicine she’s fine. When it wears off, she feels it.”

Zamayah Henry, 13, was at the playground at the same time watching her siblings play with Ruanna and Empress. 

“All of a sudden I heard these loud pops… It was out of nowhere,” Henry said, saying she saw gunmen with ski masks covering their faces.

“After two shots went off everybody was scattering. I see everybody run in different ways and they were laying on the ground,” she recalled. “One of [the wounded girls], she ran, she’s like, ‘Oh, I’m shot,’ and blood was running down her leg.”

The NYPD is investigating the shooting as a potential gang-related incident — and said the two girls were justinnocent bystanders.

“This is gonna be a gang-motivated shooting due to the area where it happened and the kids that were inside of the playground at the time,” NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Operations Kaz Daughtry told WPIX-TV Tuesday. 

“But we’re not ready to officially call it gang yet but we’re learning towards [a] gang-motivated shooting,” Daughtry said. 

Through Sunday, murders within the NYPD’s 73rd Precinct, which covers the Hilltop Playground, have jumped to 13 so far this year compared to only four during the same period in 2023, stats show.

Two dozen shootings with 28 victims were also reported in the area — which includes the Brownsville and Ocean Hill neighborhoods — compared to 16 shootings with 17 victims within the same time frame last year, the police data shows. 

For Alexander, they’re not just statistics now.

“I’m hurt, I’m disturbed, I’m at a loss for words,” she said about the stray-bullet shooting that injured her daughter.

“I’ve lived in this neighborhood all my life.. My daughter lives in this neighborhood now. She goes to the same schools I went to which is walking distance from my home,” Alexander continued.

“I’m just really sad,” she added. “My daughter could have lost her life.”

Longtime Brownsville resident Johnny Mae said things in the neighborhood have simply gotten out of control.

“It ain’t the precinct. The people is the problem,” said Mae, 64. “This is a community. We have to do it together.”

Another local disagreed — and said Brownsville needs more cops. 

“They need more police presence,” she said. “People are just outside causing havoc because there are no repercussions. There are no police so nobody is scared.”
