The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City will begin a major $4.5 million restoration of its ornate interior in June.

The 1906 building designed by McKim, Mead and White will close on June 1 and reopen on Oct. 30.

Its new glass-and-steel wing will remain open. It was added in 2006, and designed by Italian architect Renzo Piano.

The historic interior of the original building once housed the private study and library of financier Pierpont Morgan. The restoration will increase the exhibition space.

J.P. Morgan spent a lifetime collecting rare objects. They include illuminated medieval manuscripts, and drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt and other old masters. Other highlights include first editions of Victorian novels and jewel-encrusted book bindings.
