The MTA announced a new president for New York City Transit Wednesday.

Chairman Thomas Prendergast said Carmen Bianco, who led the subway system during Superstorm Sandy, would succeed him as president.

Bianco oversaw efforts to pump out water from flooded tunnels and make emergency repairs, construction work to restore service, and has been involved in long-term planning to prevent future flooding.

“Carmen is a leader with lengthy mass transit and railroad career experience,” said Prendergast.

Bianco is also known for developing the Fastrack program, which shuts down subway lines at night so the agency can concentrate repair work.

“He is the right man to spearhead our ongoing recovery efforts from the damage sustained as a result of Superstorm Sandy,” said board member Allen Cappelli.

Bianco has been working in the transportation industry for 30 years.
