The MTA’s new contactless fare payment system will be available at every subway station in the city by the end of December, officials said Sunday.
The system, known as OMNY, lets straphangers pay for single-ride fares using mobile wallets and contactless credit cards. Time-based OMNY cards will be available early next year.
Workers wrapped up installation of tap-and-go fare machines on the G and R lines last week, the MTA said, bringing the number of OMNY-enabled stations to 458 out of 472 total.
Buses in Manhattan, Staten Island and the Bronx have also had OMNY readers installed and enabled, with Brooklyn and Queens expected to be completed in the coming weeks, according to a spokesman.
Metrocards — which debuted in 1994 — will continue to be available through 2023.
