Mayor Eric Adams said Monday that his “heart goes out” to the family of the armed man fatally shot by cops over the weekend, as well as to the officers who were involved in the shooting.

“Even when someone does something wrong, innocent family members are swept out on both ends of it,” Adams told reporters at an unrelated press conference.

“My heart goes out to the family members of the young man that’s involved.

“And my heart goes out to the police officers,” Adams continued. “No police officers want to respond to an issue like that. It is traumatic, it is painful. It was just a wrong outcome to have to take the life of someone all the way around.”

The 29-year-old man, identified by police as Joel Capellan, was shot around 3 a.m. Sunday at Nagle Avenue and Dyckman Street in Inwood, where police say he was waving around a gun during a fight.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeff Maddrey said after the shooting that Capellan refused to drop the gun.

Adams said he reviewed the audio and video of the deadly encounter, adding to reporters, “Officers repeatedly stated, ‘Drop the gun, drop the gun, drop the gun.’

“When you run towards a gun and not away from it, it takes a special level of courage, and I’m happy that I have officers that are willing to put themselves in harm’s way,” Adams said, praising the cops.

Capellan, who is also known as Carlos, was out on post-release monitoring after a two-year prison stint for attempted drug sales, Department of Corrections records show. His supervision was scheduled to end July 2024.
