Nassau County has recorded its first death from the coronavirus, with the number of confirmed cases now at 139, officials said Tuesday.

The victim was a 96-year-old man who died at Mercy Hospital in Rockville Center on Monday, County Executive Laura Curran said at a press briefing, as she called on residents to continue to practice self-isolation.

“By and large people are getting the message,” Curran said. “We had to take the step yesterday and the state did as well of closing the bars because people were still going out and congregating.”

“But by and large people are getting the message that they’re part of the solution,” she said. “And economically they can be part of the solution as well.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a briefing yesterday that 615 coronavirus tests had been administered in Nassau, while announcing the state total of confirmed cases has spiked to 1,374.

The county said fears were also creeping in on the economic impact the COVID-19 virus would have on the county, which relies on a $6.1 billion tourism industry.

Curran said Nassau is launching an economic task force in conjunction with Hofstra University to gauge the expected hit the county’s economy will take.

“Just as we’ve been clear-eyed about the health impact of COVID-19, we have to be ready to face the devastating economic impact this virus will have globally, as you see in the plummeting stock market, and in our county and for our local businesses,” Curran said.
