Goodbye, Goethals!
Friday is the last day for the Goethals Bridge as New Yorkers know it – as it’ll soon be replaced by $1.5 billion twins spans that will eventually be used for east- and westbound traffic.
The 89-year-old bridge, which connects Elizabeth, NJ to Staten Island, will close around 10 p.m. Friday.
One of the two spans will be open to New York-bound traffic late Saturday afternoon and New Jersey-bound lanes will open late Sunday afternoon.
The second of the spans will open in 2018.
The twin spans of the new Goethals Bridge will feature three 12-foot lanes with 12-foot outer shoulder and five-foot inner shoulders.
It’s the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s first new bridge opening since the Bayonne Bridge was completed in 1931.
