Authorities released a mugshot of the suspected gunman who allegedly opened fire on two Newark cops — as they warned the public to be on the lookout for the “armed and dangerous’ madman still at-large Wednesday morning.
Police are intensifying their manhunt for Kendall Howard, 30, who has been charged for shooting two cops while they were trying to question him Tuesday afternoon.
“He should be considered armed and dangerous,” the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said. “Anyone seeing the suspect should call 911 immediately.”
Ahead of his capture, Howard, 30, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, prosecutors said.
The incident unfolded around 2 p.m. when police were alerted to Howard, who allegedly matched the description of a suspect from a separate shooting on Oct. 28.
Police attempted to question Howard about the shooting before the 30-year-old pulled a gun out and fired at both cops.
“They stopped him to talk to him and to identify him, and a violent interaction occurred,” acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens told reporters about the Tuesday incident.
Newark police identified the suspect as Kendall Howard, who remains at large.
Both officers remain hospitalized in stable condition at Newark’s University Hospital, according to police. Authorities are hopeful that they will be released Wednesday, WCBS-TV reported.
“This remains an active investigation,” state Attorney General Matthew Platkin told reporters near the scene late Tuesday evening.
A warrant was issued for Howard who police describe as 6-foot-3 and “armed and dangerous.”
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said he was in contact with local authorities.
“We will continue to support local law enforcement and ensure that all residents are safe,” Murphy wrote on Twitter.
