A New Jersey man started looking for a missing child after receiving a police alert on his phone — and actually found the boy roaming the streets within minutes.
Fazil Syed, of South Brunswick, was sitting on his couch watching Wednesday night’s Democratic debate when a text came through from the local police department announcing Ethan Olivacce, a 10-year-old autistic boy, had gone missing, NJ.com reported.
Instead of continuing to watch presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg get roasted on stage in Las Vegas, Syed grabbed his coat and a flashlight.
Ethan went missing hours earlier, around 7:15 p.m., when he tried to run after his father’s car as he left for an errand, his parents, Christopher and Nikia Olivacce, told the outlet. The parents thought Ethan was with the other, before checking their doorbell camera footage that showed the boy had run out into the night.
“When Chris called me to ask what did Ethan want to eat, I was confused, like, ‘isn’t he with you?’” Nikia Olivacce said. “Chris said, ‘no he’s not with me, he’s with you.’”
Cops at the South Brunswick Police Department searched for Ethan for more than an hour — with helicopters and police dogs —before sending out a town-wide alert, according to the paper.
Syed managed to find the child near a tree within 15 minutes.
“I called out, just, ‘excuse me,’ and I didn’t get any response back,” Syed told the outlet. “I called out a little bit louder and then Ethan looked out and came over to me.”
Police credited their alert system and Syed for not simply ignoring the message.
“This was the outcome we had all hoped for,” local Police Chief Raymond Hayducka said.
