A New Jersey mom has been charged in the death of her toddler, who was left in a hot car for 2½ hours, according to prosecutors.

Police had been called on May 6 by a neighbor desperately performing CPR on the 21-month-old girl after spotting her in distress in the car parked in Lakewood.

The toddler was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center but later died.

NBC reported at the time that the child was left in the car over a misunderstanding between the parents over who was bringing her in.

But mom Chaya Shurkin, 25, has been charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, it was announced Monday.

“A thorough and extensive investigation revealed that the child had been left alone in Shurkin’s motor vehicle for approximately two-and-one-half hours with the car turned off, in the heat,” Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.

“The investigation determined that the act of leaving the child in the car unattended for such a long period of time was the cause and manner of the child’s death.”

The high temperature in Lakewood on May 6 was 72 degrees, meteorologist Dan Zarrow told NJ1015.
