A town menorah was toppled over during a possible hate crime in New Jersey, officials say.

This year was the first time the town, Mendham Borough in Morris County, had erected a public menorah, according to NJ.com.

“Many of you may be aware, on Thursday night or Friday morning the Menorah that was recently placed in Borough Park was pushed over and some of the light bulbs broke,’’ Mayor Christine Serrano Glassner wrote on the municipality’s website.

“Earlier this week, when I joined with other citizens of the Township and the Borough to celebrate the lighting of the Menorah, it was sign of dedication to the inclusive spirit of our two towns.

“Any act of vandalism directed at any religion, race, gender or age should never be tolerated in our towns,’’ Glassner said.

“This incident is being investigated by our Police Department in cooperation with the Sheriff’s Department, and all appropriate protocols will be followed.”
