The memory of Sheila Nelson will live at the Connie Lekas School in Sheepshead Bay, where a new learning room for children with disabilities was named in honor of the late Special Ed teacher who taught and mentored public school students for 34 years.

The Sheila Nelson Universal Design for Learning Multimedia Center was unveiled at the school — also known as P.811K — on Haring St. between Avenues Y and Z, May 21, with a ribbon-cutting attended by her misty-eyed husband, Councilman Michael Nelson (D-Sheepshead Bay), and their daughter, Bonnie-Jill.

Nelson, who passed away in 2008, was a dean, a teacher trainer and director of the Family College at Kingsborough, who also volunteered as a family and peer mediator at local schools. In addition, she was a member of Community Board 15, where she served on the Executive Committee.

“Sheila was a true friend to P.811K, and she was known to go the distance for people with disabilities,” said Principal Antoinette Rose, adding the fully-equipped room “provides students with multiple disabilities access to technology that will enrich their quality of life, enhance their academic performance and help them to develop job skills.”
