Self-driving cars are coming to a road near you.
A measure in the budget state lawmakers are negotiating in Albany will allow autonomous vehicles on public highways next year but only for testing and demonstrating.
Self-driving cars are banned because of a decades-old law requiring drivers to keep one hand on the wheel at all times, the report said.
The budget measure would change that for self-driving cars, but still require the testing take place under “direct supervision of the New York State Police.”
The Senate passed the measure on Tuesday. The Assembly is expected to take it up on Wednesday.
