Angelo Piro, a longtime New York Post pressman and Korean War veteran, has died due to complications from the coronavirus. He was 87.
Piro served in the Air Force during the conflict on the Korean peninsula. He was described as “generous” and “beloved” by his family and friends in his Dongan Hills neighborhood.
“He was like the mayor,” said Concetta Piro, his wife of 61 years. “Very charismatic — everybody loved him.”
Piro, always seen sporting his war veteran’s cap, acted in local community theater. His favorite role was Officer Krukpe in “West Side Story,” according to his obituary in the Staten Island Advance.
He was also actively involved in the neighborhood’s St. Anne’s Church, where had served as president of the Father’s Club at the church and volunteered as a softball coach.
“Angelo was beloved in our community because he lived his life for others,” said Father Joy Mampilly, the pastor of St. Anne’s. “He had faith in God, faith in the community, and an unshakable faith in himself that he was able to do something good. And he did it.”
Piro was a pressman for the Journal American newspaper and joined The Post after it shuttered in 1966. An active member of the NY Newspaper Pressmen’s Union, Piro worked on the first-floor press in the Post’s previous headquarters at 210 South Street.

Concetta said she was not able to visit Angelo at the hospital in his final days. She has had to quarantine herself along with members of her family because they were in close contact with Angelo before he was hospitalized for care.
One morning from his hospital bed, Angelo left Concetta a voicemail after she missed his call.
“That’s all I have as commemoration,” she said. “I can listen to it any time I want on my answering machine.”
“He said, ‘Connie, where the hell are ya!?” Concetta said. “I love it. I’m so glad I didn’t answer the phone. It feels like he’s right here.”
