The head of the New York Public Library is in the running to be the new CUNY chancellor, The Post has learned.

Anthony Marx is a top contender to head the university system, the largest urban public university in the country, according to a CUNY insider.

The City University of New York’s board, the majority of whose members are appointed by Gov. Cuomo, will vote at a future meeting on a new leader.

If selected, Marx would replace James Milliken, who left in May. The board failed to find a replacement before his departure and instead named Vita Rabinowitz, the university provost, as acting chancellor.

William Thompson, the head of the CUNY board, denied there was a front-runner and would only say, “We are working to schedule a board meeting to interview a group of finalists.”
