NEWARK, N.J.— Federal prosecutors say a Newark police officer and a bank loan officer have been indicted on bank fraud charges stemming from a $1.9 million commercial real estate loan.

The police officer, 35-year-old Victor Patela, and 44-year-old Jose Dominguez, both of Newark, face conspiracy and bank fraud charges in the indictment handed up Thursday. Patela also was charged with making a bank bribery payment and two counts of loan application fraud, while Dominguez also faces a charge of receiving a bank bribery payment.

Prosecutors say Dominguez received more than $40,000 from a realty firm solely owned by Patela. The first payment allegedly came two weeks before Patela’s firm sought the commercial loan to buy apartment buildings in Elizabeth.

Telephone numbers for Patela and Dominguez could not be located Thursday afternoon.
