Newark graft bust
A former aide to Newark Mayor Cory Booker was indicted yesterday for allegedly steering city demolition contracts to a company in which he held a financial interest — starting within weeks of his 2006 appointment.
Ronald Salahuddin, 59, faces charges of extortion conspiracy, attempted extortion and accepting bribes.
Also indicted was Sonnie Cooper, owner of the firm in question, S. Cooper Brothers Trucking.
US Attorney Paul Fishman said there was no evidence Booker was involved in any illegal activity.
Booker called the allegations, if true, “a violation both of the public trust and of my trust.”
