NEWARK, N.J. — Police in New Jersey’s largest city say an abandoned suitcase that they detonated was not a bomb.
Someone noticed the case near Market and Washington streets in Newark on Monday night.
Police spokesman Detective Hubert Henderson told The Star-Ledger of Newark officers saw wires protruding from the case and an X-ray image showed electronic equipment inside.
Henderson says officers decided to safely detonate it after clearing the area and shutting down the intersection during the evening rush hour.
A later examination showed the wires apparently belonged to a camera that had been left inside the suitcase.
