Newswoman Toomey dead
Pioneering journalist Jeanne Toomey has died at 88.
Toomey, one of the founding members of the New York Press Club, became the first woman to cover Brooklyn police after she was hired by the Brooklyn Eagle newspaper in the 1940s.
She also worked for the Journal American and newspapers in Florida and Nevada, in addition to publishing a newspaper in Mexico.
A longtime resident of the East End, she wrote the novel “Murder in the Hamptons” and a book about her experiences called “Assignment Homicide.”
