Cynthia Nixon took a “Late Show” appearance as an opportunity to deliver a series of jabs against her Democratic primary opponent, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
“I would rather be the good Nixon than the bad Cuomo,” she told host Stephen Colbert of her choice to call her campaign “Cynthia for New York” instead of “Nixon for New York.”
‘Wow! Put some ointment on that burn,” Colbert replied on the Wednesday night show.
The former “Sex and the City” star didn’t stop there, saying she wants to unseat Cuomo because “we could do so much better” as a state.
“We’re a blue state but we’ve got a governor in there who governs like a Republican,” she said.
“He says he works with the Republicans but frankly, at times, it looks like he works for the Republicans,” she added.
Nixon pointed to issues like campaign finance reform, criminal justice reform, renewable energy and school funding as “the kind of stuff we want to be doing in New York.”
She told the audience she won’t be accepting corporate money, as she accused the governor of being beholden to his “big money donors.”
Nixon has also called for legalizing marijuana but told Colbert she “only smoked pot twice” in her life.
“It’s so embarrassing,” she added.
She also took the chance to shoot back at Cuomo’s assertion that her run is “silly,” reaffirming that she is “a hundred percent running for governor of New York.”
“You can have more than one career in your life,” she said.
Colbert continued to play “governor’s advocate,” as he put it, and asked, “Do we need another celebrity in office?,” pointing to President Trump.
“I don’t think there’s anything inherently wrong with celebrity in politics,” Nixon said. “It gives you a platform. But it’s what you do with that platform.”
