NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey officials are charging 25 companies with working as movers without licenses.

The charges came after a four-day sting last week.

Undercover investigators from the state Division of Consumer Affairs contacted 25 moving companies through Craigslist and other websites and asked them to move items out of a storage facility in Bridgewater.

Those that showed up included two with drivers who had suspended licenses, one in an unregistered truck and one driving a P.C. Richards and Son truck that the company said he was not authorized to use. Authorities say two movers tried to flee the scene.

The companies are being fined up to $2,500 each. But any that get moving licenses within a month can have their fines reduced.

The sting was called “Operation Mother’s Attic.”
