NEWARK, N.J. — Another New Jersey public official is going to prison for corruption.
Former Asbury Park Deputy Mayor John Hamilton Jr. was sentenced Monday to 41 months in federal prison for accepting money from an informant he believed was involved in money laundering and loan sharking.
Hamilton was convicted in 2008 of attempted extortion, bribery, lying to federal officials and attempted witness tampering.
He is the last of 11 Monmouth County officials arrested in a federal corruption sweep in 2005 to be sentenced. Eight defendants pleaded guilty, one other was convicted at trial and another died before going to trial.
