Mercer County and state environmental officials in New Jersey will each kick in $800,000 over the next 10 years to keep open an archaeological dig known as Petty’s Run.

The excavation is to uncover an old cotton and paper mill behind the Statehouse in Trenton.

A committee had voted to cover up the dig and stop work on an $87 million park near the Statehouse.
