NJ flood woe stays
Hundreds of people remained out of their homes yesterday as major flooding continued along the Passaic and Raritan rivers in northern New Jersey.
And hundreds more may need to be evacuated when the rain-swollen waterways crest today.
But officials say conditions were improving in Bergen County and some nearby areas, where flood waters continued to recede yesterday afternoon.
The National Weather Service says major flooding was still occurring along the Passaic at Little Falls, Pine Brook and Pompton Plains, while moderate flooding was reported in Boonton. That forced the off-and-on closure of numerous roadways, including some that could remain shut for days.
The floods were spurred by heavy rains that fell during separate storms last week.
