HACKENSACK, N.J. — A 5-year-old New Jersey girl whose bone marrow transplant was complicated by a visa dispute involving her older sister has left the hospital.

Yarelis Bonilla received the transplant last month at Hackensack University Medical Center from older sister Gisselle Bonilla Ramirez. She was wheeled out of the hospital Monday afternoon to a crowd of reporters and photographers. Doctors say they expect her to make a complete recovery.

The older sister lives with the girls’ grandmother in El Salvador and was found to be a perfect match. But she was twice denied a visitor visa to come to the U.S. Eventually she was granted a humanitarian visa.
