New Jersey lawmakers have postponed a vote on measures prohibiting employers and schools from requiring current or prospective employees or students to disclose social media user names or passwords.

Thursday’s votes were delayed to allow time for amendments.

The bills’ sponsor says the measures offer protections for citizens by updating rules on what information employers can request. Proponents say citizens are especially vulnerable in today’s economy.

Representatives of business groups say the bills could lead to expensive lawsuits. They also want exceptions for investigating claims against employees, such as insider trading or sexual harassment.

It’s unclear what the amendments will contain and when the measures will be voted on.
