TRENTON — State lawmakers have approved what advocates say will be the nation’s toughest law to fight bullying in schools.

The bill now goes to Gov. Chris Christie.

The measure requires anti-bullying programs in public schools and guidelines for colleges.

The bill gained attention following the suicide of Rutgers University freshman Tyler Clementi, who killed himself in September after his roommate allegedly used a Webcam to spy on his liaison with a man.

Clementi’s family said the bill calls for “a renewal of values of respect for human dignity and personal privacy.”
