NJ prop-tax showdown
TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey lawmakers might have to reschedule their Fourth of July barbecues.
Gov. Chris Christie, unhappy with the plan to cap property-tax increases that legislators sent to his desk yesterday, called a special session to force lawmakers to discuss his more stringent proposal.
The Republican governor wants a constitutional amendment to cap annual increases at 2.5 percent.
But Democrats instead approved a cap proposed by state Senate President Stephen Sweeney, setting up a showdown over the best way to rein in the nation’s highest property taxes.
