Switching off from Talmud to target practice has paid off for Raziel Cohen.

Given the moniker the Tactical Rabbi, the 28-year-old has been nominated for a prestigious Gundie Award, considered the Oscars of the firearms community.

After spending more than 10 years honing his skills and racking up certifications from the NRA and Department of Justice, Cohen is in the running for Firearms Instructor of the Year.

“This is beyond a dream,” the founder of the National Defensive Firearms Academy told The Post from his home in New Jersey. “I was shocked when I was nominated – it’s an insane feeling.”

The ordained orthodox rabbi, who has worked in correctional facilities and one-on-one across the US educating people on protecting themselves, said this year’s competition is stiff, including firearm femme fatale Anna Taylor and blonde bombshell Amelie Eichlinger-Noll.

Plenty of glass ceilings have been broken – including by this kosher cowboy.

“There’s always the initial shock and disbelief a rabbi can shoot like that,” said Cohen, who can be outfitted in tactical fatigues and a monogrammed bulletproof vest one day and donning his traditional black hat and religious attire the next. “I’m definitely not what people expect.

“Some people look at me, take a double take, then fist bump me and move on.”

No matter the background, all firearms instructors have a singular goal.

“We’re all in this for the same reason – we all want to protect our families, our communities and each other,” said Cohen.

In 2021, The Post wrote about Cohen, who fashioned a $550 kapota — the long jacket donned by married Hasidic men on Shabbat and holidays — meant to comfortably conceal a gun in a shul.

But only in the wake of the 2022 landmark Supreme Court decision that relaxed restrictions and radically reshaped gun laws, did the gunslinger behold a sea change to gun culture. That, along with Oct. 7, has transformed people’s attitude.

“Jews and guns have become more normalized in recent years,” he said, asserting that he’s trained some 5,000 people since those two events – for mostly Jewish groups.

Next month’s Gundie Awards, held at the Venetian Theatre in Las Vegas, will be a black tie event, complete with red carpet and – suffice it to say – plenty of packed heat on top of the desert heat.

The rabbi insisted that his itinerary will be to “wake up, pray, go right to the event” while avoiding the trappings that live up to the name Sin City. 

He’s looking forward to meeting other competitors – including former military and law enforcement in categories that include “Most Dapper Influencer,” “Top 2A Writer” and “Best Outdoorsman.” 

While he’s praying for a win, he knows it’s not in his hands. 

“It comes down to whatever G-d decides.”
