TRENTON — Nearly three-quarters of New Jersey’s public-school superintendents are bracing for salary cuts, as Gov. Chris Christie moves ahead with a plan to cap top administrators’ pay.

About 360 superintendents currently earn more than the proposed cap, and would draw lower salaries in their next contracts.

Under the new scale, which will take effect Feb. 7, 2011, district superintendents would earn $125,000 to $175,000 a year, depending on enrollment.

Districts with more than 10,000 students could pay more, and administrators would be eligible for bonuses based on student performance.

The rule change does not require legislative approval.
