TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey teachers are retiring at twice their usual rate this year.

The 5,400-plus who have applied this month for retirement more than doubles the total for all of last July.

Union officials cited proposals to reduce pension benefits for future retirees. Those who retire now will not be affected.
