HACKENSACK, N.J. — NJ Transit could announce proposed fare increases of up to 30 percent and “across-the-system” service cuts by Friday.
Executive Director James Weinstein told The Record of Hackensack’s editorial board as many as two to four trains will be cut from every line.
Many bus riders should also expect to wait five to 10 minutes longer to be picked up once the cuts take effect by summer.
Weinstein says there’s no choice because the agency is facing a $300 million budget shortfall and an 11 percent cut in state subsidies this year.
NJ Transit announced an emergency spending freeze on Tuesday and said it would layoff more than 200 workers. It also is cutting executive salaries.
