Gov. Chris Christie, who has urged school districts to check spending and teachers to accept pay freezes, won a major victory as voters in most towns rejected school budgets in elections.

According to unofficial results, voters turned down 315 of 537 budgets on ballots Tuesday, a rejection rate of 59 percent.

The defeats mean municipal governments that rarely deal with education issues will have to modify the school budgets.
