North Brooklyn is one of about 600 communities across the nation vying to become the trial site for an ultra-high speed broadband network by Google that would provide Internet service 100 times faster than average.

State Assemblyman Joe Lentol Friday submitted an application to get the faster Internet service in the Greenpoint-Williamsburg-Fort Greene area at the request of constituents. Some have created a Facebook page in support of the application to bring Internet speed of more than 1 gigabit per second to the area. As of 2 a.m. today, it had 447 members.

“Many constituents told me that they have been asking elected officials all over the borough to step in and … no one would do it, and I couldn’t understand it. This is an amazing opportunity,” Lentol said. “Literally everyone in my office has been working on this project since my constituents brought it to me … But if we get the broadband it will save everyone in our district time and money.”

The search engine plans to select a community and install the new fiber broadband system for free.

“Of course, we’re not going to be able to build in every interested community — our plan is to reach a total of at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people with this experiment,” Google said in a blog post yesterday.
