Funnyman Chris Rock denies he clipped a documentary maker’s work on black hairstyles for his new flick “Good Hair.”
Rock was sued for $5 million earlier this week in Los Angeles by Regina Kimbell, who accused him of stealing her movie idea from her 2007 documentary, “My Nappy Roots,” which traced the history of African-American hair care.
Rock, a Brooklyn native, said he’s wanted to do a movie ever since he stumbled into the Bronner Bros. Conventions for black hairstylists 18 years ago.
“As a comedian, I thought at the time that this convention about black hair care could be funny,” Rock wrote in a federal court filing.
He said there’s no similarities between Kimbell’s serious academic work and his “docu-comedy.”
The comic conceded he once attended a screening of “Nappy” and met Kimbell — but insisted he didn’t steal her idea. Kimbell did not im mediately return messages.
