NEW YORK — A National Transportation Safety Board official says investigators looking into this weekend’s Staten Island ferry accident have so far found no sign that it was criminal.

NTSB member Robert Sumwalt tells The Associated Press that investigators have no reason to believe it was “a criminal or intentional act.”

The National Transportation Safety Board has interviewed the chief engineer and some crew members of the ferry, which was carrying 252 passengers and about 18 crew members when it crashed at Staten Island’s St. George Ferry Terminal on Saturday.

New York City officials say the assistant captain was at the helm. About three dozen people were hurt.
